Project Themes

This project investigates the political causes and consequences of emigration. It looks at these dynamics in Mexico and Latin America but also in a comparative perspective and with a particular focus on autocratic regimes. The project pays special attention to the political consequences of migrants’ remittances and explores in detail the impact of these flows of capital on a variety of political outcomes (electoral and non-electoral behaviour as well as on economic policy choices). Dr. Covadonga Meseguer is currently working with colleagues at the Center for Research and Teaching in Economics (CIDE) in Mexico City, as well as with colleagues and researchers based in various universities in the U.K., Spain, Germany, and the U.S.

At several stages, this project has received support from the MacArthur Foundation, The Center for Research and Teaching in Economics (CIDE, Mexico City), the British Academy/Newton Mobility Fund, the LSE International Relations Departmental (IRD) Research Infrastructure Investment Fund (RIIF), and the LSE Santander Travel Fund.
